5 weeks to live: Hope

Paul tells us in Romans 6:4-5; 1 Cor. 15, that because Jesus really did shatter the gates of death and is now sitting on the throne of God as our living Lord, those who have committed their lives to Him share in his new life and can with great expectation hope to participate in it with Christ.

Our Hope comes from Christ’s death and resurrection therefore Peter can say, “Through Jesus you believe in God, who raised Him from the dead and glorified Him and so your faith and HOPE are in God.”

5 weeks to live: honesty before God

King Hezekiah and King Jehoshaphat are wonderful examples of godly men who immediately turned to God when trouble was at hand. Honesty with God is acknowledging our limits and inability to save ourselves; to admit our sins and seek His mercy.

5 Weeks to Live: fear

The psalmist asked of God "Let me know how fleeting is my life?" Many of give little thought to preparing for heaven unless we are ill or someone close to us dies. When our mortality stares us in the face we often find fear comes racing in. This message looks at the fear of dying and offers a positive approach to combat fear in Christ.

Being IN CHRIST during Lent

When we are IN Christ we have our allegiance to the first Adam spiritually removed (circumcised) and we are grafted by faith and the Holy Spirit into Christ who then washes us in baptism and regenerates our faith while taking up residence in us. Therefore knowing we are IN Him and He IN us we can take each day in Lent as an oportunity not so much to give up something as it is an opportunity to give . . . Christ. Give through acts of mercy; kindness; self sacrifice; prayer; good deeds.

He Died Helping Sanitation Workers in Memphis

Martin Luther King, Jr. was 39 years old when he was assassinated while standing on the balconey of room 306 of the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tennessee on April 4, 1968 at 6:01 p.m. He was a short stocky man with amazing rhetorical skills; he had an earned Ph.d. and could have served in any number of capacities. He came to the aid of the Memphis sanitation workers and hoped to lead a non-viloent work stopage. His last speech given in the Mason Temple on April 3, is often known as the "Mountaintop Speech". In it Dr King closed by saying he had seen the promised land - he suggested that he may not make it there with them - that he feared no man and that his eyes have seen the glory of the Lord. The next day he was assassinated by James Earl Ray.

Vulgar use of God's name

I’m of the opinion that vulgarity and using the Lord’s Name in vain is at an all time high – it’s invading every aspect of human life – and is indicative of a growing sickness of the human soul. How we use God’s Name isn’t so much a matter of what we know ABOUT God – even though I’ve gone to some length to say what we know about Him . . . NO it’s a matter of what we know OF God.

Christmas: Proactive, Reactive and Inactive

Did you know that one-third of the seven billion inhabitants of the world claim to be followers of Christ?

That’s a big number – 2.3 billion Christians – most of which observe a form of remembering this night with significance to their faith.

What is it about Christmas that should make every person on the planet stop what they’re doing and worship God through Jesus Christ?

If Jesus is who the bible claims he is, then he is the single most significant and important person ever . . . . if that is true then every person on the planet should be worshipping Him tonight.

To explore this further I want to use the sending/receiving of Christmas cards as an analogy that will help us understand the importance of this night for the entire world.

The analogy is broken into three parts: proactive, reactive, inactive.

The Season of Miracles

God makes huge promises . . . . can He fulfill them? What happens if we are not sure if He can? What if we're not sure its Him talking to us? Zechariah and Mary have two similar yet unique experiences with Gabriel that all comes to a head in a small Judean hill country town when Mary and Elizabeth meet.

St. Nicholas Day - Advent 2

Prepare ye the way of the Lord! Repent! Comes the cry of John the Baptizer. With repentance comes new life and with new life comes service. St. Nicholas, Bishop of Myra is an icon of service to Christ and His people. Unfortunately his image has been transposed into a jolly man riding a sleigh. At the heart of the real St. Nicholas is a fearless defender of the faith.
